Abstract
This building is shown with house wrap applied inside to protect the walls from animal droppings.

Roof Detail
Long lasting high-quality galvanized metal roofing on top of purlins and tar-paper.  Treated lumber is used for the super-structure, rafters and external side roof nailers.

Front Tarp and Door Detail
The tarps can be easily rolled up and suspended out of the way allowing proper ventilation and protection from the elements.  The tarps are high grade canvas (10oz) and treated to last a long time.  They are breathable and dry out easily preventing mildew and rot.  Better yet they are sheltered from much of the weather by the roof overhang so that wear and tear from the elements is minimized.

Construction Detail
The center and corner beams are bolted on and the frame junctions are gusseted (braced) to make an extremely rigid structure capable of being moved any time.  The last picture shows the tow rings that allow you to winch or pull the structure with a tractor or four-wheel drive vehicle.  Treated 4"x6" lumber is used for the frame, gusseted at every corner.

Compare to inferior buildings that you find for sale at the hardware store that require assembly (DIY) and have no significant base structure.

Stocked

On Blocks & Worm Bed
Here you can see the building raised off the ground with 8"x16" standard cinder blocks.  These are not mortared as I like to keep things reversible in case I change my mind about something later.  This also prevents the building from sitting in any moisture and provides more than enough clearance for taller people.  The last picture shows the beginnings of a worm bed underneath the cages to catch droppings.  As you see it, the building always has air moving through it.

Strength & Beauty

This is a long lasting rock hard sturdy structure capable of being moved and transported.  If you no longer need it you can easily sell it unlike the hardware store's weak buildings that must be assembled on site (by you) and disassembled if you want to move them.  Unlike cheap non-portable steel buildings it is easy to add windows, interior walls or ventilation devices.  There are plenty of sturdy frame members inside to build onto.

Unlike other "portable" or DIY buildings this is not an eye sore.  The neighbors won't complain and you will love gazing at it through your bedroom or kitchen window.  No permits necessary since the building is not fixed on a foundation.  It fits in nicely on the farm or in residential neighborhoods.  You get a choice of stain color on natural pine wood siding.  Honey Brown (Shown), "cedar", or dark "mahogany" stain colors.  You may also specify a certain brand/color of stain or treat it yourself.

Versatility & Utility

This building can also be used for goats or chickens.  Slight modifications can be made by you or you can have us include the features you need.  Due to the strong construction this building is easy to build onto and modify inside and outside without compromising its strength.

The open floor allows you to integrate a worm farm below your rabbits.  With the use of open wire cages the droppings can pass directly into the bed below feeding your worms who manufacture an immensely powerful natural fertilizer for your garden or eager customers.  Zero maintenance waste management that makes you money and keeps the rabbitry clean and odor free!

This building also ventilates very well.  There is always a constant flow of air from the bottom (assuming you don't close it off completely) to the peak of the roof.  Air flow is even present with the tarps down, although it is not drafty.

With a little care and minor maintenance this building will last a lifetime.  More importantly you will get things done right and have peace of mind knowing you have the best resources for the job.

Pays For Itself?

If you are raising rabbits as a hobby or for pets then there is little chance any of the endeavor will pay for itself.  But if you are harnessing the rabbits for meat and their valuable manure then this building certainly can pay for itself.  Especially if you have a mini farm like I do this can free up another building allowing more space for other livestock like goats or chickens that can provide more income and resources for you.

Always remember to consider resale value and time lost when constructing or purchasing another building.  Equally important is building placement and blending on your property, layout creates perceptions and feelings for certain buyers that may not be apparent to you.  If something looks or feels out of place it can dramatically lower the value or salability of your real-estate.  View your prospective building site from 50 yards or more and ask yourself if its still a good idea.  The great thing about these portable rabbitries is that they can be moved easily if you don't like the position.

This can be used as a "show building" away from larger rabbitries to impress your customers allowing you to command a higher price for your breeding rabbits.

Options:

  • No tarps, subtract $50.00
  • No internal house wrap, subtract $20.00
  • No stain, subtract $20.00
  • Foam Board wall protection (approx. 4 feet high from the base) add $200.00
  • Red barn paint (external), add $85.00
  • You can also order the rabbitry stocked with equipped cages. (Contact for prices)

Suggestions:

  • Instead of house wrap inside you could use a product called Polymax board.  Polymax can be obtained from mail order suppliers such as Tek Supply.  Polymax can be washed off easily and will last a lifetime.  Polymax is used to sheath the walls in restaurant kitchens; very durable but quite expensive.
  • To get some extra internal height you can jack up the building and set it on cinder blocks; 34 blocks will close in the bottom and make a nice base. (Usually about $1.25 a piece)
  • Two 1"x8"x88" (7.33 feet long) boards should be used to close off the ends at the ground to prevent predator access.

Notes:

The inside is not painted or stained.

Comments

"I really enjoyed your photo tour of your buildings for sale. But I can
foresee some difficulties with the design. My daughter built a chicken
shelter very much like yours, and a big windstorm one night literally blew
it over. ..."

This building is built to withstand any type of weather (barring a tornado).  We are accustomed to 70 mph winds where I live.  This building is primarily designed to be pulled along the ground by a tractor for any distance and over varying terrain.  No amount of wind is going to blow it over or lift it from the ground.  If you are really paranoid you could tie it to the ground very easily.
